United Arab Emirates immigration
Connect residence to the real work, investment or talent basis.
Compare sponsored employment, investor and partner residence, Green Residence, Golden Residence, remote work and family sponsorship before arranging the move.
Country overview
Choose the residence basis before arranging the business or household.
The UAE has federal immigration rules alongside emirate-level licensing and service channels. A company licence, shareholding, employment contract and residence permit are connected in practice, but they are not interchangeable approvals.
The correct route depends on what the applicant will actually do: work for a local employer, manage or invest in a business, qualify through specialist talent, work remotely for an overseas organisation or join a family sponsor.
Start with the activity and the issuing authority.Confirm the emirate, licensing authority, immigration channel and sponsor before committing to premises, employment or family timing.

Golden Residence
For qualifying investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talents, executives, specialists and other approved categories supported by category-specific evidence or nomination.

Route-by-route guide
Coordinate the sponsor, licensing authority and actual activity.
UAE residence planning sits across immigration, labour, licensing and emirate-level procedures. The strongest file identifies who issues each approval, what the applicant is permitted to do and which records must remain active after the residence is granted.
Employment residence: a genuine role with a UAE employer
An employment residence route is built around an approved UAE employer and a real position. The employing entity must have the appropriate licence, establishment and immigration records, and capacity to obtain the relevant work authorisation. Mainland, free-zone and government-related employers may follow different service channels even where the overall residence objective is similar.
The offer, labour or free-zone contract, job title, remuneration, qualifications and licensed business activity should be consistent. Some occupations require attested education, professional registration or additional authority approval. The application sequence can include work authorisation, entry or status change, medical fitness, biometrics, Emirates ID and residence issuance.
The employee should not assume that a signed offer alone permits work. Employer and applicant need to identify the point at which the required permission becomes effective. A move between employers, free zones or emirates can require cancellation and a new process rather than a simple update.
Renewal evidence should show that the employer remains licensed, the role continues, required insurance is in place and the employment and payroll records are accurate. When employment ends, residence cancellation, grace-period rules and the status of sponsored family members should be addressed together.
Investor or partner residence: ownership and immigration remain separate
An owner or partner connected to a licensed UAE entity may qualify for an investor or partner residence under the applicable authority process. The business licence, constitutional documents, ownership register, establishment card and immigration file normally need to support the application. Merely paying for a licence or appearing on a marketing package does not guarantee residence approval.
The company structure should be chosen for the actual activity, customers, premises, staffing and regulatory needs—not solely for an advertised visa quota. Certain activities require professional qualifications, external approvals, physical premises or local operational conditions. These can affect whether the entity is able to sponsor the owner or any employees.
After approval, licence renewal and immigration maintenance are connected. A lapsed licence, changed shareholding, removed business activity or inactive establishment record may affect the residence. Corporate tax, bookkeeping, beneficial ownership and banking requirements should also be planned separately from the immigration outcome.
Green Residence: self-sponsored categories with specific tests
Green Residence provides a renewable self-sponsored basis for eligible categories such as skilled employees, freelancers or self-employed people, and investors or partners. Each category has its own current evidence. The fact that all sit under one programme name does not make the qualification tests interchangeable.
A skilled employee may need a qualifying UAE employment contract, occupational level, education and remuneration. A freelancer or self-employed applicant may need the appropriate permit, professional history and income evidence. An investor or partner should document the approved commercial participation and relevant authority approvals. Current thresholds and documentary standards should be confirmed immediately before filing.
Self-sponsorship gives greater continuity, but it does not remove labour, licensing or professional rules. The holder should verify whether each intended employment, consultancy or business activity needs a separate permit and how a material change must be reported.
Golden Residence: long-term residence based on a qualifying category
Golden Residence is available to qualifying applicants in defined categories, which may include investors, entrepreneurs, executives, scientists, specialists, exceptional talents and other recognised profiles. The application must satisfy the route actually selected. A broad claim of seniority, wealth or professional success is not a substitute for category-specific evidence.
Investor files should explain ownership and a traceable source and placement of funds. Entrepreneur files may need evidence of the venture, innovation, value and required endorsement. Specialist and talent cases can depend on qualifications, achievements, recognised work, professional licences and nomination or recommendation by a competent body.
Long-term validity should not be confused with permanent residence or citizenship. The holder must continue to meet the applicable conditions, keep identity and insurance records current and report changes where required. Family sponsorship can be a major benefit, but each dependant still requires the appropriate civil and immigration documents.
Virtual and remote-work residence
A virtual-work route may suit a person who lives in the UAE while remaining employed by, or operating for, an organisation outside the UAE. The file should show the overseas employer or business, remote nature of the work, contract or ownership, recurring income and health insurance required by the current programme.
The evidence should be more than a letter created for the application. Employment contracts, company registration, invoices, client agreements, bank credits and tax records should demonstrate an ongoing overseas activity. If the applicant begins serving a UAE employer or carrying on a locally licensed activity, the immigration and commercial basis may need to change.
Living in the UAE while directing a foreign business can raise corporate tax, management, banking and permanent-establishment questions. A valid residence permission does not decide those issues, so the business structure should be reviewed alongside the personal move.
Family sponsorship: connect the household to a valid principal status
A valid resident may be able to sponsor eligible spouses, children and other family members under the current rules. The principal's residence, relationship, accommodation, financial capacity and insurance may form part of the file. Marriage, birth, custody and dependency documents often require attestation and translation before use in the UAE.
Family applications should be timed around the principal's Emirates ID and residence stage. School enrolment, healthcare, insurance and the spouse's intended work are separate practical matters. A sponsored spouse who wants to work may need the appropriate labour or free-zone approval even while remaining on family residence.
Choose the correct authority and emirate
UAE applications can involve federal identity and immigration services, Dubai-specific immigration services, labour authorities, economic departments, free-zone authorities and sector regulators. The route name may look similar across channels while forms, sequence, fees and supporting documents differ.
Before signing a lease or licence package, identify the issuing authority, sponsor, permitted activity, establishment requirements and the place where the applicant will genuinely work or live. This prevents a low-cost setup from becoming unusable for the intended staff, bank account or regulated activity.
Maintaining UAE residence and operational continuity
Keep a single calendar for passport validity, residence, Emirates ID, medical or insurance requirements, company licence, establishment records, work authorisation and dependant permits. The principal and family expiry dates may not be identical. Travel and absence rules should also be checked for the particular residence category.
Material changes—employer, occupation, ownership, licence, passport, marital status or sponsorship—should be reviewed before action is taken. The most durable UAE plan is not the one with the longest headline validity; it is the one whose sponsor, licensed activity, evidence and household remain aligned throughout the residence period.

Renewal can depend on continued employment, valid licensing, qualifying investment, maintained category criteria, insurance and timely identity formalities. A change of employer, company status or principal sponsor can affect the residence and dependant files.
Family sponsorship should be sequenced after the principal route is sufficiently secure. School admission, tenancy, healthcare and banking may also depend on local identity and residence steps.
Do not present long-term residence as permanent status.Green and Golden residence remain category-based, renewable permissions subject to the rules in force.
FAQ
Questions before selecting a UAE route.
Does opening a UAE company guarantee residence?
No. The licence and immigration file may support an investor or partner application, but residence eligibility and formalities remain separate.
What is the difference between Green and Golden Residence?
They serve different eligible categories, durations and evidence standards. The applicant should be assessed under the exact current category rather than the programme name alone.
Can a remote worker use a local employment residence?
A remote worker employed outside the UAE and a person employed by a UAE organisation rely on different legal bases and should not mix their evidence.
Which authority handles the application?
The responsible channel depends on the emirate and route. Federal ICP services and Dubai GDRFA services should be checked alongside the relevant employment or licensing authority.
